Days 59 to 64: New Mexico

As we welcomed November, so too did New Mexico welcome us. Driving down from Mesa Verde, we navigated the tiny towns in Colorado’s quarter of the Four Corners, rolling along through cliff-framed Ute desert into New Mexico and the Navajo Nation. Desert landscapes stretched on forever around us, as we made it all the way to Albuquerque for a few days’ camping at an off-grid farm, surrounded by scrub and the wailing of the coyotes. All the while, we gorged ourselves on the leftovers of our Telluride Thanksgiving dinner.

Albuquerque had great food—The Last Call‘s melty, queso-filled burritos were luscious, as was the brunch at Farmacy—and was fun to explore by car. We stopped outside a handful of shooting locations from the Breaking Bad universe (many of which were unexpectedly close together), and enjoyed the unique architecture and Indigenous touches across the cultural landscape.

Soon, we were on to Santa Fe, with its adobe houses and omnipresent public art. We had a perfect New Mexican lunch at Pantry, a local institution, and had the chance to drive the city’s narrow streets, taking in the scenery. Several folx in Colorado had strongly encouraged a Meow Wolf stopover, and we’re glad to have taken their advice. It was a child’s psychedelic art dream (and nightmare), but it was fun to explore and exciting to support a young artists’ collective turning their creative energies into an altered kind of reality.

We enjoyed the sun-soaked desert, even though it got so cold at night, and even though coyotes peed on our tent. Continuing east, we find ourselves in the Texas Panhandle, on our way to Hampy’s (and Tegan’s) North Carolina homeland in time for December.
